Carotid Ultrasound
Carotid duplex ultrasound imaging is performed to assess the blood flow in the carotid arteries, which are the main vessels supplying blood to the brain. Narrowing or blockage in these arteries, often caused by a build-up of fatty deposits known as atherosclerosis, can increase the risk of stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). A carotid duplex scan uses advanced ultrasound and Doppler technology to evaluate both the structure of the artery and the speed of blood flow, allowing early detection of any significant narrowing or abnormality. This examination is commonly recommended for patients with symptoms such as dizziness, visual disturbance, weakness, or previous stroke, as well as for those with risk factors including high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, or high cholesterol. Early identification of carotid artery disease allows appropriate medical treatment or specialist referral, helping to reduce the risk of serious complications.
Venous Diagnostics
Venous duplex ultrasound is performed to assess the veins and the flow of blood returning to the heart, helping to diagnose a range of conditions affecting the venous circulation. This scan is commonly used to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT), evaluate varicose veins, and identify problems with the valves inside the veins that can lead to swelling, pain, skin changes, or ulceration. Using advanced ultrasound and Doppler technology, the examination allows detailed assessment of both the vein structure and the direction of blood flow, enabling accurate diagnosis without the need for invasive tests. Venous ultrasound may be recommended for patients with leg swelling, discomfort, visible varicose veins, or suspected blood clots, as well as for those requiring follow-up after previous venous disease or treatment. Early and accurate diagnosis helps guide appropriate management and reduces the risk of complications.
Arterial Assessment
Arterial Doppler ultrasound assessment is performed to evaluate the blood flow within the arteries and to detect narrowing, blockages, or reduced circulation that may affect the limbs or other parts of the body. This examination uses duplex and Doppler ultrasound technology to assess both the structure of the artery and the speed and pattern of blood flow, allowing accurate identification of peripheral arterial disease and other circulatory disorders. Arterial ultrasound is commonly requested for patients experiencing symptoms such as leg pain when walking, cold feet, non-healing wounds, or reduced pulses, and may also be used to monitor known vascular disease or assess bypass grafts and stents. Early detection of arterial problems is important in preventing complications and helps guide appropriate medical or surgical treatment.
